I always thought of ac-Company as one of the sub-meanings. It came from the realisation in Being Alive that Bobby has about being alone and the fact that she/he wants to be accompanied through life.
You guys have great interpretations! I especially like Dana's point about Bobby trying to limit his exposure to relational problems. I hope to see you all in class on Monday!
2 is company, 3 is a crowd, but in the constant company of a long term partner, having another person around for company is like a mini vacation. There's the relaxation of coming home from vacation too, once the company leaves.
I read somewhere that Company compares relationships to New York - Compa NY? And for Follies, two married couples lying to themselves and suffering - Four Lies
One of the best stage musicals that I have ever seen was the Barrington stage production of Company with Aaron Tveit several years ago, just before he was cast in the Broadway show that earned him this year’s Tony award. Despite some of the outdated material of the show, the whole cast absolutely triumphed. The actress who sang the incredible “Ladies Who Lunch” was beyond belief!! I think if Mr. Sondheim had ever had the chance to see her, he would have been blown away.
Incidently, I corresponded on several occasions with Mr. Sondheim, and the guy was truly a mensch.
In the original Company, I do remember married women profusely helping Bobby to be married, and later with their spouses clinching the deal - helping him figure it out himself - till he's one of them. - Miserably Happy, but not alone.
A "company" in the sense of a corporation is a legal means to limit liability, and Bobby in a sense has tried to limit his exposure to the problems caused by human interaction.
The clip is very reminiscent of Company. Since Marta Kauffman studied at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Acting from 1978 to 1980, she may have done scenes from Sondheim. Kevin Bright worked under Joseph Cates who produced musical specials for TV.

Makes sense. Sondheim would have loved the wordplay.
