David Benkof is offering two classes next week, both at Noon EDT:
Monday, June 15: Philip Roth’s “Defender of the Faith.” An assimilated Jewish sergeant has to examine his own identity when an upstart Jewish private attempts to use their co-religionist status to his advantage. This is the first meeting of a six-week course on the short fiction of Philip Roth. Sign up for the single class or the entire series at tinyurl.com/BenkofShortFiction.
Thursday, June 18: The Lyrics of Stephen Sondheim. What makes Sondheim’s language so rich and rhymes so brilliant? An exploration of the lyrics from shows like “West Side Story,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Company,” and “Into the Woods.” No previous exposure to Sondheim necessary. A 75-minute enhanced version of a previous class. Register: tinyurl.com/BenkofLyrics.
Reminder: Dozens of my American Jewish culture videos are available at tinyurl.com/BenkofChannel. Examples: “Broadway’s Ten Best Shows” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sounds of Silence.”
On another note, I am available to speak to Jewish institutions and organizations online. Here’s a description of my teaching. Hit reply if you’re interested in inviting me to offer a special class to your group.
