TOMORROW and Noon and 8 pm ET, The Broadway Maven will host a class on Anything Goes. An important example of the pre-Oklahoma! Broadway musical, the 1934 show contains larger-than-life characters like onetime evangelist nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Moonface Martin, Public Enemy Number 13 (it’s funnier that it sounds).
The songs and score are by the great Cole Porter, and include “You’re the Top”; “Friendship”; “I Get a Kick Out of You”; “Blow, Gabriel Blow”; and of course the title song:
“In olden days, a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking.
But now, God knows,
Anything goes.”
In classic Broadway Maven fashion, we’ll learn about the show’s creators and watch some clips, discussing themes and where to place the show in the history of musical theater.
