Tomorrow Thursday at Noon EDT Jewish Culture 101 will offer a class exploring the life, music, and the legacy of Jewish liturgical pioneer Debbie Friedman who (along with Shlomo Carlebach) democratized Jewish music in the last quarter of the 20th century in a way that permanently altered both synagogue worship and the Jewish community.
Her Havdalah (lie, lie, lie…) is now sung in every movement of Judaism in every corner of the Jewish world, and her Mi Shebeirach is the most important petitionary prayer in all of liberal Judaism.
So far, more than 1,000 students have attended Debbie Friedman 101 sessions, which explore the songs in this sampler, putting them in the context of Debbie’s impact: bringing Jewish music to camp, bringing camp music (and camp values) to temples, and bringing the revolution she helped facilitate to the wider Jewish community.
