Philip Roth: are Hasidim "fanatical"? Or are you?
Also: Sondheim's best, American Jewish History and Literature 101
Note: all classes are at Noon EDT.
There are still sign-ups left for Monday’s class on Philip Roth’s “Eli, the Fanatic.” Eli is an assimilated Jewish lawyer sent by the local community to expel a “fanatical” yeshiva of Holocaust survivors that has moved into their suburban town. As his personal and professional life begins to unravel, he begins wondering how, exactly, is the fanatic. The brisk 50-page short story is available at tinyurl.com/BenkofEli. And sign up for the class (and the following Monday’s “The Conversion of the Jews” class) at tinyurl.com/BenkofShortFiction
And the next two Thursdays we explore two of Sondheim’s best: Into the Woods (July 9) and West Side Story (July 17). Sign-ups: tinyurl.com/BenkofWestWoods
The rest of the July schedule is also posted above, with highlights including American Jewish History 101; American Jewish Literature 101; Debbie Friedman; and “If You Could See Cabaret Through My Eyes.”
A reminder: Jewish Culture 101 classes will ALWAYS be free, but please consider paying the optional $6 tuition. It’s appreciated and helps the class continue and maybe expand.
Subscribe to my YouTube Channel here: tinyurl.com/BenkofChannel. You’ll find dozens of American Jewish culture videos, including “Broadway’s 10 Best Jewish Shows” and “The Strange Journey of the Akeida.”
I have an updated version of my one-minute video introduction to the course. It’s located at tinyurl.com/BenkofVideo. Could you consider sharing it with your FB friends or address list?
I am available to speak to Jewish institutions and organizations online (and eventually in person!). Here’s a demonstration of my in-person teaching and this one-minute intro shows how Jewish Culture 101 works. Hit reply if you’re interested in inviting me to offer a special class to your group.
