NEW: Schoolhouse Rock-y, the Holocaust, Arthur Miller 101
Monday classes for September announced
Great news! I’ve just announced three exciting Monday classes for September, with all-new content:
• “Schoolhouse Rock-y: the Songs of Lynn Ahrens” (September 7)
Lynn Ahrens was responsible for some of the most memorable songs in the Saturday-morning children’s educational program “Schoolhouse Rock,” including “The Preamble,” “Interplanet Janet,” and “Interjections!” She also wrote the lyrics to several landmark Broadway shows including Ragtime, Seussical, Once on this Island, Rocky, and Anastasia. • “The Holocaust and American Jewish Culture” (September 14)
Some of the cultural interpretations of the Holocaust by American Jews are famous, like Schindler’s List and MAUS. But many other unsung but equally meaningful bits of poetry, sculpture, painting, music, and television related to the Holocaust are just as worthy of examination. Sign up: bitly.com/BenkofHolocaust
• “Arthur Miller 101” (September 21)
Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is virtually by consensus one of the five best American plays in history, and many consider it number one. With that play and other standouts like All My Sons and The Crucible, Miller has helped explore the meaning of the American Dream - and its limits. Sign up: bitly.com/BenkofMiller
• Note: there will be no class September 28 because of Yom Kippur.
Click the links above for sign-ups, and as always the latest classes are updated with links at bitly.com/BenkofClasses.
(Also coming up: Mel Brooks 101 on August 17; Painters on August 20; Funny Women on August 24; Women Photographers on August 27; and Humorists on August 31.)
