Upcoming free online classes:
I’ve just announced “SNL’s Jews,” a new Jewish Culture 101 class on Thursday, July 2 at Noon EDT. We’ll be looking at memorable Jewish sketches and performers over the 45-year history of Saturday Night Live. Register: tinyurl.com/BenkofSNL.
Also, a two-part class on Philip Roth’s debut novella Goodbye, Columbus starting today Monday, June 22 and finishing Monday, June 29 both at Noon EDT. This timely book (which you don’t have to read before class) explores issues of class, race, and privilege in the Jewish community of the 1950s. Register: tinyurl.com/BenkofShortFiction.
Finally, “Jewish Visual Artists from Chagall to Rothko,” will meet on Thursday, June 25 at Noon EDT. We’ll look at some works by 10 Jewish painters and sculptors and photographers, etc. and help students learn to recognize and analyze them. Register: tinyurl.com/BenkofArtists.
Quick calendar (everything Noon EDT):
• June 22: Goodbye, Columbus, part one
• June 25: Jewish Visual Artists
• June 29: Goodbye, Columbus, part two
• July 2: SNL’s Jews
Please note that while all courses are 100% free, there is a completely optional tuition of $6 per class and a sliding scale available for those who wish to pay less or more. I’m happy to keep offering free classes if few people pay tuition, but it won’t be as often.
Reminder: Dozens of my American Jewish culture videos are available at tinyurl.com/BenkofChannel. Examples: a five-minute video on Debbie Friedman’s Mi Shebeirach and a four-minute video on Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.
On another note, I am available to speak to Jewish institutions and organizations online (and eventually in person!). Here’s a demonstration of my teaching. Hit reply if you’re interested in inviting me to offer a special class to your group.
