June: FREE "Jewish Broadway" course
Mondays in June: Fiddler on the Roof, Ragtime, Barbra's musicals
At Noon and 8 pm on Mondays in June, The Broadway Maven offers a FREE mini-course on “Jewish Broadway”:
• June 7, Fiddler on the Roof
It’s considered the Gold Standard of American Jewish musicals. But what are its mixed messages? How does the choreography by Jerome Robbins unify the piece? And what’s the one piece of advice that will improve your evening at the theater if you see Fiddler?
• June 14, Ragtime
Ragtime was one of the best-constructed musicals of the 20th century. Its unfolding story of blacks, Jews, and rich whites in 1904 or so is matched by soaring melodies and rollicking numbers set to, well, Ragtime music. What makes this show so special? Why hasn’t it found the audience it deserves?
• June 21, Barbra Streisand’s musicals
Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly!, Yentl. Even I Can Get it For You Wholesale. We’ll look at Barbra’s musical appearances on stage and screen and ask: what was her signature style and why was it so enduring?
