Notes:
A. With race relations and immigration in the news, the relevance of Jewish past for today’s Jewish community is perhaps more important than ever. In tomorrow’s “American Jewish History 101” class we’ll discuss not only WHAT we know about Jewish history, but also HOW we know it. Then, a week later (July 27), in “American Jewish Literature 101” we’ll look at selections from the poetry, fiction, and drama that Jews have created in the United States. Register for both or either class: tinyurl.com/Benkof101
B. Thursday (July 23) I’m offering “Debbie Friedman 101,” which I’ve taught to more than a thousand students so far. We’ll look at the life, the music, and the impact of one of the two most important 20th century pioneers of Jewish liturgical music. (Shlomo Carlebach is the other.) Sign up: tinyurl.com/BenkofMi
C. The rest of the schedule is below; All classes are at Noon EDT:
• Thursday, July 30 “If You Could See Cabaret Through My Eyes.” Register: tinyurl.com/BenkofMyEyes
• Every Monday in August “Funny Jews.” Registration is open for the whole five-week course OR just the first “Norman Lear’s sitcoms” class on Monday, August 3. (The other classes are on Mad Magazine, Mel Brooks 101, Funny Women, and Humorists.)
All “Funny Jews” sign-ups are at tinyurl.com/BenkofFunny
D. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel here: tinyurl.com/BenkofChannel. You’ll find dozens of American Jewish culture videos, including a fun two-minute video on “When Broadway Borrows Music from Shul” and a new compilation of “The World’s Official Havdalah” including more than 20 Jewish groups singing Debbie Friedman’s famous tune (lie, lie, lie…).
E. I’m booking Zoom talks for individual organizations, and eventually in-person classes. Here’s a demonstration of my in-person teaching and this one-minute intro shows how Jewish Culture 101 works.
NOTE: All classes are 100% free, with a completely optional tuition of $6 per class, or $5 per class when you pay for a series of two or more classes.
